Recognizing a True Believer

That the FDA allows the industry to infuse it with so many evident poisons stands as an epic failure of public oversight.
http://www.grist.org/article/2011-02-16-aspartame-soda-caramel-BPA-diet-soda-kill-you

The linked article was written by a TB.  You can tell because they think that the problem with the FDA is it just isn't living up the ideals of a centralized government - more protection for those that need it.  In this case, he's worried about all us poor uninformed consumers who aren't being protected from the potential evils in a can of diet soda.

In the article, the author laments the FDA's inability to stand up to the food industry.  But he's got it all backwards - it would be a massive surprise if the FDA WAS standing up to the food industry.  We've allowed the federal government to take control over massive sections of our economy and therefore our personal activities.  Businesses MUST struggle for influence in a system which is politicially, and therefore irrationally, controlled - or they will die.

In short - political meddling by federal agencies with too much power isn't a surprise unless one is either:
1 - ignorant and naive
2 - a true believer in government, in which the facts will never be an obstacle to the faith

Let's face it, this is the least of the FDA's shortcomings.  It has yet to pronounce sugar a threat to health, despite a massive wave of diabetes in this country.  It has been the agent of perpetuating the statin scam, allowing even young, healthy women to be prescribed a drug which has never been shown to benefit women, and has only been shown to benefit men under age 65 with previously diagnosed heart disease.  It never asserted it's authority and has allowed the DoA to establish the food guidelines, not challenging them even thought their basis in science is tenuous at best.

The entire concept is a joke.  The FDA serves predictable masters, politicians and monied interests, and there's no rational basis to believe it will ever do otherwise.

Fitness blog

Careful about the conclusions, these are not interventions studies they are observational studies only.  Causality therefore is not proved - but the information is consistent with a large amount of theory.  I take fish oil every day, and given the prediliction for polyunsaturated (vegetable oils) to oxidize, eat them only when I have to.

"A diet rich in fish, omega-3 oils, fruits and vegetables may lower your risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, whereas consuming omega-6 rich oils could increase chances of developing memory problems, according to a new study.

Isn’t it ironic that the very oils we’re told to consume, omega-6 rich polyunsaturated vegetable oils (peanut, corn, soy, etc), are contributors to mental decline? It’s not incredibly surprising if you put the consumption of such oils into the context of evolution. Polyunsaturated vegetable oils have only been possible in the last century or so when we could press huge quantities of grains like corn to get the extremely small amount of oil. Our ancestors never ate corn oil. They weren’t eating olive oil either, but an olive is a naturally oily, fatty fruit. As Ray Peat discusses here, polyunsaturated fats are immunosuppressive."

Mike Eades Hits another Homerun

http://www.proteinpower.com/drmike/inflammation/odds-and-ends-june-28-2009/#more-3113

This post, once you get past the luggage review, is dense with information. First, how to think about observational studies v. an intervention study (crib notes - use one to form hypotheses, use the other to test them. The former is useless in establishing causality, the later is necessary to establish causality).

Second, he summarizes what we all need to know about fat cells and children.

Third, he touches on the fact that exercise has not been shown to be an effective tool for weight loss. He concisely summarizes the info on this topic and then comments on two recent studies confirming this opinion.

Lastly, he gets into fiber. I like his perspective: "Fiber - who needs it?" I don't.

Intrusive Leadership, A Life 'Saved'

Perhaps the better term is a 'life enhanced' or 'magnified' or 'accelerated' ... It's a great tale of leadership, what the Navy would term "intrusive leadership." There's plenty of character and transformation sprinkled in.

From a friend who would like to remain anonymous:
"I hardly deserve designation as a "Crossfitter". Three years ago I was about 50 pounds overweight and had become physically lazy. I was on the path to the extreme obesity that characterizes my extended family. A dear friend who is a personal trainer and member of my church told me he would not watch me "dig my grave with my spoon." Thus started three years of free training with him twice a week in his little private gym. His stuff is CF-like, but is very much his own. He's been in the biz for about twenty years, training everyone from the very elderly to athletes.

My intro to CF came shortly thereafter through another friend at church who is a federal LEO who I started training with for fun and extra accountability. That led to a tight friendship with these guys and a few others who surfaced as fitness psychos. So I have a very eclectic training routine. I have an appointment to work out with SOMEBODY four days a week!

The personal trainer's influence and insistence saved my life. He was not only the catalyst, he refused to let me quit for TWO YEARS. He made me keep a food journal, and once scheduled a meeting in my office to talk to me about junk food he saw on my shelves. Thanks to his diligence, fitness is now a passion of my own, though he still won't let me stop hitting his gym twice a week. And he still won't take money. I've finally settled into providing the bottled water, but it humbles and honors me when he comes to the gym at 6 a.m. to train me even when he sometimes knows that no other paying clients will be there. He's just that committed to my well being and our friendship. I'm a blessed man.

If you're still reading all this, thanks. I have a debt of gratitude to repay.

And precisely for that reason, I'm committed to being truthful and honoring those to whom honor is due."

My friend, I humbly salute your reclamation of your life and I'm sure you've realized by now how that process has magnified your own influence over your flock.
